Lahore, Pakistan – May 28, 2025 – Pakistan kicked off their three-match T20I series against Bangladesh with a commanding 37-run victory in the first encounter at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. A stellar all-round performance, highlighted by captain Salman Agha’s fluent half-century and a sensational five-wicket haul from the returning Hasan Ali, proved too strong for the visitors.
The match, played under a clear Lahore sky, saw Pakistan win the toss and elect to bat first on a pitch that promised runs. The home side, however, endured a shaky start, losing both openers – Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman – inside the first two overs, leaving them reeling at 5/2. Mahedi Hasan struck in the first over, dismissing Saim Ayub for a duck, caught and bowled. Shoriful Islam followed up with the wicket of Fakhar Zaman (1 off 4 balls), trapped leg-before.
It was then that skipper Salman Agha and Mohammad Haris steadied the ship. Mohammad Haris played a brisk cameo, scoring 31 runs off just 18 balls, including 4 fours and 1 six, before being caught by Tanzid Hasan off Tanzim Hasan Sakib. This 48-run partnership for the third wicket brought some stability to the innings.
After Haris’s departure, Salman Agha continued to build, reaching a well-constructed half-century. He formed another crucial partnership with Hasan Nawaz, who provided the much-needed impetus with a rapid 44 off 22 deliveries, featuring 2 fours and 4 sixes. Their aggressive approach pushed Pakistan’s score past the 100-run mark. Agha eventually fell for a superb 56 off 34 balls, laced with 8 fours and 1 six, caught by Tanzid Hasan off Hasan Mahmud.
The middle order continued to accelerate, with Shadab Khan playing a blistering knock of 48 runs off just 25 balls, including 5 fours and 2 sixes. His late assault ensured Pakistan posted a formidable total of 201/7 in their allotted 20 overs. This was the first time Pakistan scored over 200 in a T20I at Gaddafi Stadium. Khushdil Shah (5 off 10) and Faheem Ashraf (11* off 6) contributed to the death overs surge.
For Bangladesh, Shoriful Islam was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 32 runs from his 3 overs. Mahedi Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rishad Hossain, and Shamim Hossain all chipped in with a wicket each, but their economy rates suffered as Pakistan’s batsmen found their rhythm. Rishad Hossain was particularly expensive, conceding 55 runs from his 4 overs.
Chasing a challenging target of 202, Bangladesh’s innings also began with early setbacks. Parvez Hossain Emon (4 off 5 balls) and Tanzid Hasan (31 off 17 balls, 2 fours, 3 sixes) showed some initial intent, but the Pakistani bowlers, led by the fiery Hasan Ali, were relentless.
Litton Das, the Bangladesh captain, held the innings together for a significant period, scoring a commendable 48 runs off 30 balls, including 1 four and 3 sixes. He tried to forge partnerships, notably with Tawhid Hridoy (17 off 22 balls), but wickets continued to tumble around him. Hasan Ali’s superb spell broke the back of Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Jaker Ali provided some resistance in the lower middle order with a quickfire 36 off 20 balls, smashing 1 four and 3 sixes. However, it was a lone hand in the face of a disciplined Pakistani bowling attack. Hasan Ali, making a fantastic comeback to international cricket, ripped through the Bangladeshi batting, finishing with exceptional figures of 5 wickets for 30 runs in 3.2 overs. Shadab Khan also played a crucial role with the ball, picking up 2 wickets for 26 runs from his 4 overs, earning him the Player of the Match award for his all-round heroics. Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, and Salman Agha claimed a wicket each.
Bangladesh was eventually bowled out for 164 in 19.2 overs, falling short by 37 runs. The disciplined bowling and sharp fielding from Pakistan ensured they maintained pressure throughout the chase, never allowing Bangladesh to get comfortable.
This convincing victory marks a strong start for Pakistan in the series and will provide a significant confidence boost, especially with the performances of key players like Salman Agha, Shadab Khan, and the returning Hasan Ali. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their batting inconsistencies if they hope to challenge Pakistan in the remaining matches.
