Key allowances for Indian Railway employees

They get a dearness allowance (DA) that is also revised every six months.

The DA is calculated as a percentage of their basic salary.

The current DA stands at 55 per cent.

The basic salary and DA are the main components of the salary structure of any central government employee.

House rent allowance (HRA)

They get a house rent allowance based on the city of their posting.

Cities are divided into the X, Y, and Z categories.

For X-class cities, HRA is 24 per cent of the employee’s basic salary and DA.

For Y-class cities, it is 16 per cent, while for Z-class cities, it is 8 per cent of their basic pay and DA.

However, when DA touches the 50 per cent mark, the rates are revised to 30, 20, and 10 per cent for X, Y, and Z class cities, respectively.

Transport allowance

Central government employees get a transport allowance for travelling between their residence and workplace if the distance is more than 1 km.

The allowance is based on the pay level and posting in X and Y cities.

The range starts from Rs 900 plus DA and goes up to Rs 7,200 and DA. It depends on the level and basic pay of an employee.

City compensatory allowances

This allowance is given to compensate for the high cost of living in different cities.

The allowance is given according to the classification of cities and groups of scale.

These allowances are based on X- and Y-classified towns and can be up to 10 per cent of the employee’s basic salary.

Running allowance

Drivers, shunters, and guards get this allowance. These allowances can be mileage allowance, allowance in lieu of mileage and breach of rest allowance.

Uniform allowance

Railway staff who are supplied with uniforms are required to wear them regularly and get an allowance for it. The rates for uniform allowance are-

Nurses, matrons, midwife and health visitors = Rs 1,800 per annum

The rest of all other staff = Rs 5,000 per annum

Other allowances
