President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Tuesday (April 29, 2025).

Justice Gavai would take charge as the CJI on May 14, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Sanjiv Khanna demits office.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025,” Mr. Meghwal said in a post on social media platform X.

The Law Ministry issued a notification announcing Justice Gavai’s appointment as the 52nd CJI. Following the laid down procedure, his name was recommended by Justice Khanna on April 16 to the Union Government. He is the senior-most Supreme Court judge after the incumbent CJI.

Justice Gavai will have a tenure of six months and would demit office on December 23 on attaining the age of 65.
