Labour Day 2025: Are banks, Stock Markets, schools open on May 1? All you need to know

Labour Day, celebrated annually on May 1, honours the contributions of workers and the labour movement that took root in the late 19th century. Also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, it is a significant occasion to recognise the efforts of the working class across all sectors.

Are banks open on May 1?

In observance of Labour Day, which coincides with Maharashtra Day, banks in several cities will remain closed on Thursday, May 1, 2025. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, bank closures vary from state to state depending on regional, national, and religious events.

Banks will be shut in the following cities: Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana), Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, and Thiruvananthapuram.

Will Stock Markets remain closed?

The Indian stock exchanges—National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE—will also remain closed on May 1, 2025. Labour Day is listed among the 14 official trading holidays for the year. As a result, there will be no trading activity across all segments, including equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).

Closure of schools and Government offices

In Maharashtra, schools and government offices will remain closed on May 1 in observance of Maharashtra Day. In addition, many states across India mark Labour Day as a public holiday, leading to closures of educational institutions and government offices in several regions.

Liquor shops to remain shut

Maharashtra will observe a dry day on May 1. Consequently, liquor shops across the state will remain closed, and the sale of alcohol will be prohibited for the day.

What will remain open?

Despite the public holiday, essential services such as hospitals, emergency services, and public transport will continue to operate as usual across the country.
