Authorities at the city zoo are hopeful that a blue-and-yellow macaw that escaped from its enclosure on Friday afternoon will return soon.
The colourful parrot was seen entering the nesting box inside the enclosure on the CCTV cameras but did not come out. Later, a portion of the net was found broken. It is presumed that the bird escaped that way.
On Saturday, a sighting of the adult macaw was reported from the Observatory, but when the zoo staff reached there it flew off.
The macaw was one of the three that hatched at the zoo in June 2022. A bird that prefers the uppermost branches of trees, the macaw is expected to return to the zoo since it is not used to finding food on its own outside.
In October 2024, two macaws at the London Zoo had made good their escape but when zookeepers tracked them down, the birds flew down to their arms. The zoo authorities are hopeful of a similar happy ending in this case.
They have appealed to the public to inform the Department of Museums and Zoos on 0471-2316275 if the big parrot is spotted.
