Karnataka State Election Commissioner G.S. Sangreshi said on Saturday that elections, being the foundation of strengthening democracy, play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future.

Delivering a special talk on “Indian Democracy and the Role of Elections in Shaping its Future” at Faran Auditorium of Karnataka Arts College, he said that it was, however, regretting to note that the people in urban areas had been showing less interest in participating in the electoral process when compared to the rural electorate.

Emphasising the need for active participation in the electoral process, Mr. Sangreshi also stressed that none should fall prey to temptations or inducements. “Citizens must participate in the electoral process ethically and responsibly. And youths have a more responsible role to play,” he said.

He advised the students against becoming slaves of technology. “Instead, study diligently and develop proficiency in languages,” he said.

Releasing the annual college magazine, Registrar of Karnataka University A. Chennappa underscored the need for students to understand the Constitution, democracy, and the election process. He also stressed the need for students to keep themselves updated about the current affairs.

Principal D.B. Karadoni presided over the programme while Prof. Suresh Hullannavar made introductory remarks. On the occasion, a plaque featuring the preamble of the Constitution was unveiled at the Department of Political Science.
