For the eleventh straight night, Pakistan has violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC), further escalating tensions with India in the wake of the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. The Indian Army confirmed that it responded to unprovoked small arms fire by Pakistani troops during the night of May 4-5 across multiple sectors in Jammu and Kashmir.
The firing was reported from areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. These repeated ceasefire violations come amid strained relations between the two countries following the Pahalgam attack, which left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead.
The pattern of cross-border firing began on the night of April 24, just hours after India announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Pakistani forces initially targeted Indian posts in the Kupwara and Baramulla districts of north Kashmir. The firing then spread to the Poonch sector and eventually reached Akhnoor in the Jammu region.
India and Pakistan had agreed to a renewed ceasefire along the borders in Jammu and Kashmir in February 2021.
