Jindal India Renewable Energy targets to add 5 GW renewable capacity in 5 yrs

The BC Jindal Group, a leading business conglomerate, plans to achieve a target of 5 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The group, through its renewable energy arm, Jindal India Renewable Energy, plans to invest $2.5 billion (about ₹21,500 crore) in the sector over the next five years to meet India’s growing energy demand while enhancing grid stability through battery energy storage systems.

Betting big on solar and battery storage, the group plans to achieve the 5 GW clean energy target through a mix of solar, wind, hybrid, and firm and dispatchable renewable energy projects.

JIRE is also exploring expansion of its operational renewable energy assets across India. The expansion, expected to be completed in 4 years, will be funded through internal accruals and debt.

The company is also working on a technology collaboration to ensure high-quality battery production. Additionally, the group plans backward integration by foraying into the manufacturing of key components such as solar cells and modules, said the group spokesperson.

JIRE recently received a Letter of Acceptance for a 300 MW solar plus storage project from state-owned enterprise NHPC, signalling its expertise in large-scale renewable projects.

The project was part of NHPC’s 1,200 MW inter-state transmission system-connected solar power initiative, which includes 600 MW/1200 MW energy storage systems.

JIRE is also setting up solar cell and module manufacturing plant of 2 GW annual capacity in Maharashtra, which is expected to be operational by September 2026.

With India’s renewable energy sector growing rapidly, battery storage technology is becoming essential for grid stability and efficient power management. The Indian battery energy storage system (BESS) market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 11 per cent till 2032, driven by the increasing need for round-the-clock renewable power supply.

Founded in 1952, BC Jindal Group has expanded from a steel pipe manufacturer into a major player in the power sector. The group currently operates a 1,200 MW thermal power generation unit in Angul, Odisha and is now focusing on renewable energy through JIRE.
