Perambalur-based Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Group is acquiring Shri Andal Alagar College of Engineering (SAACE), a private college in Chengalpattu founded by late actor and politician Vijayakanth. While the deal size is unknown, sources said it could be over ₹150 crore.
Recently the Tiruchi-based JJ College was acquired by Sowdambika institutions. Similarly, a leading college in Salem was acquired by a Coimbatore-based college. About two decades back, Jeppiar group acquired Maamalan and SRR institutions.
The trend of bigger colleges acquiring smaller ones will continue as the supply of such institutions is large in the state, and the smaller establishments find it difficult to run operations, sources said.
AICTE-approved Shri Andal Alagar College of Engineering (SAACE) offers a variety of courses at UG and PG levels. Courses are offered in specialisations such as Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Information Technology, Power Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and others. It offers admissions to around 400 seats, according to information on the web.
Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Educational Empire is one of the largest multicultural education hubs of South India. It offers educational courses from Arts & Science, Engineering to advanced research in Medical Sciences. It has campuses at Perambalur, Trichy and Chennai.
The main campus at Perambalur is spread over 450 acres housing the institutions and hostels, per information in the college website.
Tamil Nadu has one the highest number of colleges in the country. Under the Department of Collegiate Education, around 1,632 Arts and Science colleges are functioning, of which 172 are Government colleges, 161 aided colleges, and 1,299 self-financing colleges, as per Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Department Policy Note for 2025-26.
The State is also home to 463 Engineering and Architecture Colleges of which 11 Government colleges, 20 Anna University colleges, three aided colleges and 429 Self-financing colleges.
There are nearly 1.50 lakh engineering seats available in Tamil Nadu every year.
