The Centre on Monday issued a ‘high risk’ warning for Apple iPhone and iPad users in India, saying iOS versions prior to 18.3 and iPadOS versions prior to 17.3 were affected.
“A vulnerability in Apple’s iOS and iPadOS may allow certain malicious applications to unresponsive or non-functional until restored,” the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said.
It said these software are at “very high risk” of rendering devices inoperable and potential for bricking devices.
“Darwin notifications are a low-level messaging system within the CoreOS layer, enabling processes to broadcast and receive system-wide event notifications. The vulnerability arises due to the fact that any iOS application can transmit sensitive system-level Darwin notifications without needing special privileges or entitlements,” CERT-In said.
Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow malicious applications to cause affected devices to become unresponsive or non-functional until restored, it added.
According to Apple, the company doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues for its customers’ protection until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are available.
The company, meanwhile, has released security patches to address the issues and urged users to upgrade their devices to the latest versions of iOS or iPadOS without delay.
Apple also advises users to avoid downloading apps from untrusted sources and to monitor devices for abnormal activity that could signal a potential breach.
Recently, the company also warned users worldwide of possible government-sponsored spyware attacks. It sent alerts via email and text message, informing recipients that malicious software had targeted them.
