Private medical colleges should not collect any fee while offering internship to students and if they did, legal steps would be initiated against them through the Fee Fixation Committee, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said in the Assembly on Wednesday.
In his response to a call attention motion moved by some legislations in the House, Mr. Subramanian referred to the provisions of the National Medical Commission (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) Regulations, 2021. The colleges were to be provide stipend to students taking up internships, he said.
AIADMK’s C. Vijayabaskar, VCK’s S.S. Balaji and Panruti MLA T. Velmurugan, among others, moved a call attention motion regarding the fees for students admitted under the 7.5% government quota in undergraduate medical programmes. They highlighted various challenges were faced by the students at the hands of some private medical colleges. They also said that some private medical colleges were collecting a fee from students for offering internships.
During his reply, the Minister said that if there were any complaints over private medical college collecting any fee for offering stipend, they could submit them to the Fee Fixation Committee and action would be initiated against the medical college.
In a detailed report tabled in the House, Mr. Subramanian said that the State government was providing ₹1.49 lakh as fee (in case of government medical colleges) for students who were admitted under 7.5% reservation in medical and dental college seats for students who passed out of government schools.
The State government was providing ₹9.07 lakh for each of these students in case they were studying in private medical colleges, the Minister said.
In a related debate, Mr. Vijayabaskar and Mr. Subramanian sought to contend that it was due to their respective party’s effort that the State government was able to provide 7.5% reservation in medical and dental college seats for students who passed out of government schools.
