WhatsApp launches advanced chat privacy feature to block exports and disable auto media downloads

In a major move to strengthen user privacy, WhatsApp has rolled out a new Advanced Chat Privacy feature aimed at limiting the spread of private conversations and media beyond the app. The Meta-owned messaging platform made the announcement via its official blog on Wednesday, confirming the feature is now being made available for both Android and iOS users.

The new feature enhances the existing privacy safeguards like end-to-end encryption by preventing others from exporting chats and automatically downloading media files. It also limits how messages can be used in Meta’s AI tools, offering an added assurance to users that their conversations remain confined to the platform.

Key highlights of the advanced chat privacy feature

  • Chat Export Blocked: Once enabled, users can block others from exporting one-on-one or group chats, minimizing the risk of external sharing.
  • No Automatic Media Downloads: The feature stops media sent in chats from being automatically saved to recipients’ devices.
  • Meta AI Restriction: Messages from these chats are also restricted from being used in Meta AI features.
  • Group Chat Focus: Particularly useful for group chats with unfamiliar participants or sensitive topics, this tool is designed to foster safer and more secure conversations.

How to activate it?

  • To enable the feature, users can tap on a chat name, then select Advanced Chat Privacy from the settings menu. WhatsApp confirms the feature is being gradually rolled out to users with the latest app update.
  • WhatsApp also revealed that this is just the first iteration of the Advanced Chat Privacy tool. The company plans to introduce additional protections in future updates as part of its continued effort to enhance user privacy.
  • This update adds to WhatsApp’s growing suite of privacy options, which already includes disappearing messages, chat locks, and end-to-end encryption—features that cater to users seeking higher levels of communication security.
