Bomb blasts on Friday destroyed the houses of two local terrorists suspected to be involved in Phalgam terror attack.

The explosions took place inside the houses of Asif Sheikh and Adil Thoker.

Shiekh is suspected to be involved in the Pahalgam terror attack while Thokar has been named as one of the prime accused by the police.

Shiekh belonged to South Kashmir’s Tral area, while Thokar is a native of Anantnag district.

On April 22, the terrorists struck Baisaran meadows in Pahalgam, some 92 kms south of Srinagar, and killed 26 people including a local tourist guide.

Soon after the attack, security agencies released the sketches of the suspected terrorists and in the initial investigation, the names of both Sheikh and Thokar surfaced.

Sources said that the authorities demolished the houses of both the terrorists by blowing them up, using explosives.

However, police said that during a search operation at Sheikh’s house, the security forces found some suspicious objects.

“Sensing danger, security forces swiftly retracted for safety but there was a huge blast in which a house got badly damaged. It seems that the house stored some explosive material”, said the police.

The police sources said that no loss of life was reported as the area was cleared and the family members were evacuated.

Before 2019, South Kashmir was considered the epicentre of militancy, with frequent gun battles reported from the region. However, over the past five years, the area has witnessed relative calm, with fewer local youths joining militant ranks.
