“Don’t get influenced by what others say. Take guidance but choose a career of your interest,” Director of Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology Vrushabhendrappa Y. has said.
He was inaugurating The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling 2025 at Bapuji B School in Davangere on Sunday.
Prof. Vrushabhendrappa emphasised the need for equipping oneself with skills to face challenges.
Narrating his own experience as a fresh engineering graduate way back in the 1960s and how lack of information deprived him of opportunities, he called upon students to make use of career counselling sessions to make an informed choice.
Prof. Vrushabhendrappa called upon students not to feel inferior just because they come from small towns and villages.
“All of you are unique and have different abilities. You have to identify and explore them to make a good career out of it,” he said.
Prof. Vrushabhendrappa also elaborated on the history of engineering in Karnataka when there were only three branches. “Now, there are over 300 courses in Engineering and in Karnataka, 35 courses are being offered. You choose a course of your choice based on your capabilities,” he said.
Mentioning that there are umpteen opportunities available, he said that career counselling has become essential for students and parents to make informed choices and lauded The Hindu Group for organising the event.
Founder and CEO of CIGMA India and member of Karnataka Higher Education Council Ameen E. Mudassar in his typical style presented a wide picture of varied career options that are available to students. He told students to remember that career is not a course. “You all have the aptitude, personality and interests and you only have to channelise them towards a career of your choice,” he said.
Speaking about the changing trends and technological advances, he said that keeping in with the times, having multiple skills has become mandatory.
He advised them against herd mentality and told them that they should not choose a career just because a friend or a relative have chosen it.
Professor and Head of Department of Microbiology, S.S. Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Institute, Davangere, V.L. Jayasimha listed out the pre-requisites for becoming a doctor.
He asked students to choose medicine out of interest and not out of compulsion. “You require passion, compassion, hard work and commitment to become a good doctor,” he said.
Lecturer in Computer Science and Engineering and KEA representative Rajesh Hongal briefed the students about the online counselling process and what students and parents should keep in mind while attending counselling to choose courses of their choice.
Chartered Accountant Shivanand Malagavi, who is a Functional Consultant at Consero Global MNC, spoke on career options in chartered accountancy and the scope for it.
Several students and their parents actively took part in the interactive session and raised questions on various career options and the scope for various courses, while resource persons cleared their doubts and also a few misconceptions.
