Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, who was participating in a public event in South Gujarat, has rushed to Ahmedabad civil hospital where passengers of the ill-fated Air India flight that crashed near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, are being taken.
Patel, who was in Bardoli addressing farmers, along with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, reached Ahmedabad about 1.5 hours after the accident. The CM held meetings with doctors and officials of the civil hospital and local authorities. Meanwhile, the accident site has been cordoned off by the Gujarat Police to enable rescue efforts, official sources said. Relatives of passengers onboard the ill-fated Air India flight have reached the Civil hospital in Ahmedabad to check on their kin, sources added.
The government is expected to make public the number of casualties in a short while. Earlier, the Air India flight that departed at 1:38 pm for Gatwick with 242 passengers, crashed in a residential area in the Meghaninagar area — located adjacent to the airport — and exploded into a ball of flame. The multistoried buildings in the vicinity of the crash were charred in the explosion. Officials said the plane crashed near the hostel mess of BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area, and the number of medical student casualties was not immediately known
Officials said the Ahmedabad airport, which operates separate terminals for domestic and international operations, is surrounded by residential areas in the South, East and North, while Ahmedabad cantonment lies on the western side. Airport operations at the airport were temporarily suspended after the crash. The airport was made operational in the evening with limited flights, according to a statement from Adani Airports. Dedicated passenger hotline numbers have been provided both by the Ahmedabad airport and the state government.
