Air India flight to Birmingham with 133 people on board crashes in Ahmedabad


A passenger aircraft has crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday, government sources.

According to preliminary reports, the aircraft belonging to Air India has crashed. Emergency services have been activated, a senior minister from Gujarat government told businessline. Plumes of black smoke could be seen emanating from the area near the airport.

The plane was headed to Birmingham, an aviation source told Reuters.

The crash occurred when the aircraft was taking off, the TV channels reported. Visuals showed debris on fire, with thick black smoke rising up into the sky near the airport.

More than 100 people were on board the flight, channels said.

They also showed visuals of people being moved in stretchers and being taken away in ambulances.
