In a move to address seasonal challenges, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced an interchange of themes for its Swarna Andhra–Swachha Andhra (SASA) programme for the months of May and June. The theme “Beat the Heat,” initially slated for June, will now be observed in May, while “Neeru–Meeru” focusing on water conservation will be implemented in June.
The decision was made considering the prevailing climatic conditions to ensure more effective public engagement and better outreach outcomes. “This adjustment would enhance the effectiveness of outreach efforts and ensure greater public participation,” Principal Secretary Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department S. Suresh Kumar said.
Under the revised plan, the “Beat the Heat” theme will drive initiatives such as the creation of early warning systems for heatwaves, distribution of water at public places through Water ATMs, promotion of cool roofs and green spaces, and special awareness campaigns for vulnerable groups. Meanwhile, the “Neeru–Meeru” activities in June will concentrate on cleaning and constructing rainwater harvesting structures, promoting water conservation across all sectors, and implementing water scorecards to monitor conservation efforts.
The SASA programme, launched in January 2025 to promote cleanliness and systemic environmental improvements, has seen massive public participation with over one crore citizens engaging in monthly activities themed around waste management, plastic reduction, and e-waste control.
Reaffirming the programme’s flexible approach, Mr. Suresh Kumar emphasized that while broad themes are assigned monthly, local authorities are encouraged to adapt activities based on specific regional needs to maximize impact.
The government reiterated its commitment to fostering a cleaner, greener, and healthier Andhra Pradesh through sustained community involvement and strategic interventions aligned with seasonal demands.
