Asian markets traded cautiously eyeing slew of corporate earnings and key economic data

Asian markets today: Asian stocks traded cautiously in Tuesday’s session (April 29, 2025) as investors awaited a host of corporate earnings and economic data this week. The key MSCI Asia ex Japan index traded higher by 0.51 per cent or 2.91 at 576.69.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng advanced by as much as 0.51 per cent, while Australia’s S&P/ ASX 200 also traded firm with gains of 0.85 per cent. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kospi also traded higher by 0.8 per cent.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry once again on Monday denied that it was in talks to lift the tariffs.

With adjustments for parts in US automobiles that are manufactured abroad and the so-called stacking of taxes on foreign-made vehicles, Trump is on track to lessen the harm that tariffs are causing to the auto industry.

Major economic data, megacap earnings eyed

Investors are looking forward to a busy week with a slew of US economic data due to be released, including the Federal Reserve’s inflation gauge – the PCE price index, and the monthly US jobs report. In addition, the US will also be releasing its first-quarter GDP print later in the week.

Meanwhile, the market is awating earnings from megacaps such as Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta Platforms among others.

Oil prices

Crude oil prices fell, dragged by lowered demand expectations amid the lingering US-China trade war. Brent crude futures fell by 25 cents, or 0.4 per cent, to $65.61 per bbl by 0024 GMT. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures fell 18 cents, or 0.3 per cent, to $61.87 a barrel. Both benchmarks fell more than $1 on Monday.

Gold prices

Gold prices slipped as easing trade tensions dented safe-haven demand. Last, gold futures in the international markets traded lower by over 0.5 per cent at $3,329.49 per ounce.

Futures for the S&P 500 swung between small gains and losses. The dollar steadied and gold dropped as much as 0.6%. There’s no trading of cash Treasuries in Asia as Tokyo is closed for a public holiday, and they will open at the start of the European session.

The five-day rally in US stocks, the longest advance since November, faces a significant test this week amid US data from jobs to inflation and economic growth, as well as earnings from some of the biggest technology companies. Some calmness has returned to financial markets in the past week after the Trump administration’s trade policies sparked volatile trading in stocks and bonds and prompted traders to sell American assets, including the dollar.

“Underneath the surface, key risks persist — trade tensions, recession worries, and monetary policy uncertainties are very much alive,” said Fawad Razaqzada at City Index and Forex.com.
