Bank Holiday Update: Most banks across India are open Wednesday, with closures limited to just two cities — Gangtok and Shimla — due to Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti and Saga Dawa, respectively, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) 2025 holiday calendar.
Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti honors the birth anniversary of Kabir Das, a 15th-century poet and social reformer known for advocating equality and spiritual unity. Saga Dawa, observed mainly in Himalayan regions, marks the birth, enlightenment and death (parinirvana) of Lord Buddha.
Under the RBI’s guidelines, which follow the Negotiable Instruments Act, RTGS holidays and regional observances, bank holidays vary by state and occasion.

Banks are closed in Gangtok, Sikkim, in observance of Saga Dawa, and in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, for Sant Guru Kabir Jayanti.

What services remain available on a bank holiday?
Online interbanking services remain in continuous operation on bank holidays throughout the country. Customers can avail themselves of a whole range of financial transactions without the need to go to the physical branch.
Services such as sending funds using NEFT and RTGS, making chequebook and demand draft requisitions, and card functions pertaining to credit, debit, and ATM cards continue to be uninterrupted.
Along with these services, you can make withdrawals or deposits into your account and send standing instructions, including locker applications, through digital platforms. Thus, even if a branch is closed, banking can be used through these services.
