Bengaluru Bank Holiday: Banks across Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka will remain closed today, April 30, on account of Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, both festivals are recognised as official bank holidays in the state.
Basava Jayanti commemorates the birth of Basavanna, a 12th-century philosopher, poet, and social reformer revered particularly by the Lingayat community. The day holds cultural and religious significance in Karnataka. Simultaneously, Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious Hindu festival, is being celebrated. Falling on the third day of the Vaishakha month, Akshaya Tritiya is believed to be a highly favourable day for starting new ventures and making investments, especially purchasing gold, as it is associated with lasting prosperity.
Banks to remain closed in multiple cities on May 1
Banks in several major cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Patna, will also be closed on May 1. The holiday marks both Maharashtra Day, celebrating the formation of the state of Maharashtra in 1960, and International Labour Day, which honours the contributions of workers worldwide.
April witnesses multiple bank holidays
April has been marked by several bank holidays due to regional festivals and regular weekend breaks. Banks were closed on April 26 for the fourth Saturday, a non-working day as per RBI norms, followed by the regular Sunday holiday on April 27. Additionally, banks in Shimla observed a holiday on April 29 for Parshuram Jayanti, celebrated in certain states.
Advisory for bank customers
As bank holidays differ across states based on local and national events, customers are advised to verify the holiday schedule with their respective branches. Banks also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays. For the latest updates on bank operations and holidays, customers can refer to the official RBI website and notifications issued by individual banks.
