Troubled edtech major Think and Learn, parent company of Byju’s is grappling with yet another issue as the Byju’s learning app has been removed from the Google Play Store due to ongoing disruptions in payments for its services, according to people familiar with the matter.

Other apps operated by the company — such as Byju’s Exam Prep, which caters to aspirants of competitive exams like the IAS, MBA, and UGC NET, and the Think and Learn Premium app — remain available on the platform.

Though Byju’s website continues to function, several features are currently affected by technical issues. Services like free session bookings for students in grades four to nine, as well as the Byju’s Early Learn programme for children up to grade three, are experiencing server errors.

Aakash Institute, the test preparation company owned by Byju’s parent firm Think & Learn, remains fully operational.

Founder Byju Raveendran has continued to publicly comment on the company’s legal and operational challenges, most recently outlining the company’s next chapter, dubbed Byju’s 3.0.

This new phase emphasises a shift from profit-driven priorities to a purpose-oriented model, with a renewed focus on enhancing learning outcomes for students in the lowest performance quartile.

Raveendran also acknowledged that securing a $1.2 billion term loan in 2021 was a misstep, especially in light of available equity alternatives at the time. The loan is now the subject of legal proceedings brought by Glas Trust — the representative of the US lenders — in the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). Glas Trust is also a member of the committee of creditors at Think & Learn.
