The Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee has demanded that the State government name the soon-to-be-developed Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu road after M.G.S. Narayanan, the historian who recently passed away, in recognition of his commitment to the cause of the road.
In a meeting on Monday (April 28, 2025), the committee noted that the 15-year struggle of the action committee was pivotal in advancing the road project. “The project, declared in 2008, could have been abandoned in 2012. But the action committee, led by MGS, exerted pressure, resulting in the completion of land acquisition during the tenures of Chief Ministers Oommen Chandy and Pinarayi Vijayan. It has now reached the tender floating stage.”
The committee said that the completion of the road was the last wish of MGS, which he had mentioned in his final letter to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. The 8.4-kilometre stretch of the Mananchira-Vellimadukunnu section of NH 766 is a major road that passes through the city. The development was delayed due to the proposed NH 766 development project, which is still awaiting approval from the Central government. Therefore, the committee urged the MLA and the Minister for Public Works to expedite the project as a tribute to MGS.
