Congress is the villain number one of Telangana as it was that party’s government that had forcibly merged Telangana (Hyderabad State) with Andhra in 1956 against the wishes and opposition of the people, founder-president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said.

Addressing a huge rally at Elkathurthy outside Warangal on Sunday (April 27) on the occasion of the party’s 25th inception day (silver jubilee of the party’s foundation), he said while the Jawahar Lal Nehru government had merged Telangana with Andhra, the Indira Gandhi government had trampled the 1969 movement for Statehood by shooting dead 400 persons.

In 10 years after the State formation the BRS government had taken Telangana to new heights of development and welfare with a high per capita income, GSDP growth rate, completion of pending projects, introducing many welfare schemes and initiating path-breaking interventions — like Rythu Bandhu and Rythu Bima — to help the farming community to provide them some relief from frequent distress conditions, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao explained.

“The Congress government has ruined the State’s economy due to lack of experience and its inability to handle the administration of the State,” the BRS founder said adding that he did not speak against the government for the last 18 months as they (Congress) would term it “hasty”. But, it had become necessary for him now to speak up against the inefficient administration for the sake of the State’s future.

Crowd response

The crowd responded loud and clear whenever Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao highlighted the Congress government’s failure in his address and cheered him whenever he spoke of the need for BRS’ return to power. He, however, made it clear that BRS would never indulge in toppling the government as is being alleged by the ruling party often and instead lay in wait for the government to complete its term so that people could differentiate between the administration under the BRS and the Congress.

He blamed the promise-making spree of the Congress, including by the Gandhis who descended on Telangana to make more than 420 promises without assessing the State’s finances and economy, for the ruling party’s failure to keep many of the promises. He noted that bulldozers were used for de-silting irrigation tanks by the previous BRS government but the Congress regime was using them to raze the homes of the poor in the name of HYDRAA.

He cautioned the police personnel against harassing and victimising the BRS ranks and leaders and explained how they had created hurdles for the Elkathurthy meeting by issuing notice to private school managements who have given their buses, motor vehicle inspectors harassing other private vehicles. He also hit out at BJP too for not releasing funds for any schemes in Telangana during the last 11 years.
