The country should stand united in light of the recent terror attacks in Pahalgam, but the Congress will continue to pose questions to the government over its actions, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal has said. He was speaking at the culmination of the Samvidhan Bachao rally organised by the Congress party in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.

“Fifteen days after the attack, India is waiting for an action from Narendra Modi. The country is waiting for concrete action to teach Pakistan a lesson, rather than verbal challenges,” said Mr.Venugopal in a speech in which he contrasted the Congress’s reaction as an Opposition party to that of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the Mumbai attacks on 2008, when Congress-led UPA was in power.

Regarding the Union government’s decision to include caste enumeration in the next national Census, he said that it is a victory for the Congress and its leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been raising the demand for the past five years.

“In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those demanding caste census are urban naxals. Now, they have given in to the demand. But, it remains to be seen whether the caste census will also have the fate of the women’s reservation bill, on which no action has been taken over the past two years. We need to have a proper timeline for the caste census,” said Mr.Venugopal.

He said that laws are now being made in the country by the “brains” sitting in Nagpur. Recent legislations like the Waqf Amendment Act are a result of this. The BJP is attempting to target and isolate the Muslim community while injecting poison in the minds of the Hindus. The Congress will stand with all religions which are under attack, he said.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) Chairperson K.Sudhakaran, who presided over the public meeting, said that the Constitution, which is under attack, is the foundation that has held the country together since independence.
