Due to a recurrence of infections in parts of Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong, health authorities in India are keeping a close eye on an increase in Covid-19 cases in several states.
According to official data, as of May 19, 2025, there are 257 active cases in India. The maximum number of cases is found in cities like Mumbai, Kerala, Chennai, and Ahmedabad.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed health officials to remain alert about the spread of Covid-19 in the state but also said there was nothing to worry as far as Uttar Pradesh was concerned.
The central government has not issued any new health advisory.
“The Indian government has not issued any guidelines on Covid-19 so far. But in view of the surge of cases of the JN.1 variant in Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong, we need to remain alert. All teams at medical colleges and hospitals should remain alert,” the UP CM told officials in a review meeting on Wednesday, May 21.
He emphasised the importance of regular testing and timely maintenance of these critical facilities.
State-wise Covid-19 cases
Maharashtra
In May, Mumbai reported 95 new cases, as per the Maharashtra health department. In the city, around 16 people are currently hospitalised.
In Pune, municipal officials have kept 50 beds reserved at Naidu Hospital as a precautionary measure. There is no active cases currently in Pune.
According to the health department, a total of 6,066 swab samples have been examined for coronavirus since January, of which 106 tested positive for the infectious disease. Of these, 101 were from Mumbai and the remaining from Pune, Thane, and Kolhapur. Currently, 52 patients are undergoing treatment for mild symptoms, while 16 are being treated at hospitals.
“A spike in Covid-19 cases is not only being seen in Maharashtra, but also in other states and even other countries,” said the health department release.
Earlier, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday said, “Covid-19 is now considered an endemic and an ongoing health problem. As the virus has become established at the community level, cases are now sporadic and very rare.
“Common symptoms of Covid-19 include fever, cough (dry or with phlegm), sore or achy throat, fatigue, body aches, and headache. Symptoms may also include a runny nose and a loss of taste or smell. These symptoms can often be similar to those of a common cold and can vary from person to person. In severe cases, difficulty in breathing is a major warning sign,” said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s health department.
Tamil Nadu
In Puducherry, there are 12 new coronavirus cases and in Chennai, the doctors are linking fever cases with Covid-19.
The highest number of cases is reported in Kerala (69) since May 12.
Karnataka & Gujarat
According to state health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, there are 16 active cases in Karnataka currently.
In Gujarat, seven new cases have been reported.
