DMart shares slide nearly 6% amid block deal activity

Shares of Avenue Supermarts Ltd, the parent company of the DMart retail chain, slumped nearly 6 per cent on Tuesday, following reports of a large block deal in the stock. The stock fell as much as 5.98 per cent to Rs.3,928.90 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), raising investor concerns over the scale and nature of the transaction.

According to a report by CNBC-TV18, approximately 16 lakh shares of Avenue Supermarts changed hands in multiple transactions across stock exchanges. The shares were reportedly traded at an average price of Rs. 4,000 apiece, resulting in a total deal value of around ₹634 crore. The identities of the buyers and sellers in the transaction have not yet been disclosed.

Despite the day’s sharp dip, the stock recovered marginally later in the session. Avenue Supermarts closed at 2.33 per cent lower at Rs.4080.50 on BSE. The sudden sell-off has sparked speculation in market circles, though no official commentary has been issued by the company. Such block deals typically involve large institutional investors or promoters offloading or acquiring sizeable stakes. However, without clarity on the parties involved, market participants remain cautious.

DMart’s performance in 2025 has largely been positive. The stock has gained 15% year-to-date, reflecting investor confidence in its business model amid a broader retail recovery. Over the past three months, the stock is up 14%, and 3% over the last month. However, it has declined 14% over the past 12 months, suggesting some volatility and profit booking after previous highs.

Over a longer time frame, Avenue Supermarts has remained a strong performer, delivering 72% returns to investors over the past five years. The company, backed by veteran investor Radhakishan Damani, operates one of India’s most successful supermarket chains and is often viewed as a bellwether for consumer sentiment in the retail sector.
