An elephant, aged between 35 and 40, was found dead in Bandipur Tiger Reserve, on Saturday.
Forest guards during ground patrol came across its carcass in Hirikere forest of Somanathapura Sandal Reserve in the Gopalswamy Betta Range of the tiger reserve.
Senior Forest Department officials reached the spot on receiving information and wildlife veterinarians conducted the post-mortem and collected the viscera from the carcass for laboratory analysis.
Authorities said the laboratory analysis would help ascertain the cause of death. Prabhakaran, Director, BTR, B.M. Mallesh, Range Forest Officer, and others were present.
