Police arrested a 49-year-old former AIADMK president of Kangeyanoor village near Polur and his associate for assaulting a tribal who sought medical expenses after being injured in a road accident a few days ago.
The arrested persons were identified as K. Ganesan, a local AIADMK functionary and former panchayat president, and V. Dharani, 22, a mini-van driver.
Initial investigations revealed that B. Satya Kumar, 31, a member of the Narikuravar community, was riding his two-wheeler with his wife S. Preetha, 27, and son Jai from Krishnagiri to Kangeyanoor village. Their vehicle was hit by Dharani who was transporting milk in the mini van.
In the impact, Satya Kumar sustained fractures. Immediately, passersby and other motorists admitted him to Government Taluk Hospital in Polur. Later, along with his family members, Satya Kumar met Ganesan at his milk procurement centre and requested him to pay medical bills for the injury caused by his driver.
Angered by it, Ganesan allegedly assaulted him and his family members including father N. Balu. The video of the incident went viral in social media platforms that sparked public outcry.
Based on a complaint by Satya Kumar, Polur police registered a case against Ganesan, who was later arrested and lodged at sub-jail in the town. A probe is under way.
