Former Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana termed the caste enumeration in the Census as a landmark decision and said it will go a long way in bridging the socio-economic divide while granting the rightful share to all sections of the society in power and prosperity.

“The decision to hold the next census, with caste enumeration factored in, is a much-needed step, though much delayed,” he said in a statement, further adding that caste and caste-based discrimination were a harsh reality in our society. “For too long a time we preferred to live in denial,” he added.

Mr. Ramana said, “For a vast and diverse country like India, unless we gather authentic data, it is not possible to view the big picture and formulate a scientific strategy for all round progress of our people and our nation.”

Congratulating the Central government, he also hoped that the next census will also factor in every possible social index so as to make it a comprehensive exercise aimed at common good.
