GSSS architecture students rally for green Mysuru

Underlining the imperatives of environmental conservation, students and faculty from the GSSS School of Architecture for Women (GSSS SOAW), Mysuru, took to the streets on cycles and electric scooters to raise awareness about the growing impact of urbanisation and climate change in the city.

The institution organised the rally recently, highlighting environmental issues such as rising summer temperatures, the loss of green cover due to road-widening projects, the encroachment of open spaces for residential developments, and increasing instances of urban flooding during monsoons.

The organisers said the city was reeling under soaring temperatures in summer, and the encroachment of open spaces had increased the concrete footprint in Mysuru.

The participants rented eco-friendly “Trin-Trin” cycles and electric scooters to demonstrate a cleaner mode of sustainable transportation.

The rally commenced from the Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple and passed through prominent city landmarks like Gandhi Square, Chikka Gadiyara, Devaraja Urs Road, and the Deputy Commissioner’s office, before concluding at Kukkarahalli Gate.

A release said that students taking part in the rally also performed street skits at major stops, including the Kote Anjaneyaswamy temple, Chikka Gadiyara, and Kukkarahalli Gate, and raised awareness on areas of concern like deforestation, pollution, and the water stress.

The climax featured a symbolic appearance by Devi Chamundeshwari, urging Mysuru residents to conserve water, opt for public transport, and increase nature’s footprint in Mysuru.

The rally concluded with an appeal to the people of the city to not only celebrate the grandeur of Dasara, which is the essence of Mysuru, but also cherish and protect the city’s natural heritage for future generations, the release added.
