K-CIS completes 25,000 inspections – The Hindu

The Kerala Central Inspection System (K-CIS)—the centralised inspection system for industries— has crossed the 25,000-mark with considerable success, as claimed by the Industries department. However, industry owners have called for better awareness about the system’s objectives among the agencies involved and an increase in manpower to meet inspection requirements swiftly.

“The success of K-CIS is an example of how quickly the Industries department is being professionally remoulded,” said Industries and Law Minister P. Rajeeve in a social media post. The centralised system, he pointed out, has replaced the practice of officials getting involved in inspections. This has resulted in fewer delays and helped reduce the fear among industry owners about random inspections, he added.

Kerala State Small Industries Association president A. Nisaruddin welcomed the development and said it had worked well, reducing delays and alleviating uncertainty in the minds of entrepreneurs. “However, there are isolated cases where delays are still experienced. This can be addressed by creating awareness among the officials involved in conducting inspections and ensuring they understand the spirit of the new initiative,” he added.

The inspection regime has been put in place by coordinating departments such as the Local-Self Government, Factories and Boilers, Labour, Legal Metrology, and the Pollution Control Board. All inspections are conducted under a single head, with a schedule prepared electronically to avoid any bias.

The establishments are informed about the inspections, and reports are uploaded within 48 hours. The fully online process eliminates the chances of officials being biased towards any establishment. There are around five lakh industrial establishments registered under K-CIS, and pending complaints will be cleared as the new inspection process gains momentum. Anyone can raise and upload a complaint for consideration by the authorities through the system.
