The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive over Kerala in the next four to five days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This is almost a week before as monsoon usually arrives around June 1.
This prediction follows the IMD’s earlier prediction that Kerala would experience the monsoon by May 27. An important shift in this year’s monsoon pattern is represented by the early progression.
In an X post, IMD wrote, “During the past 24 hours till 0830 hours IST of today, the 20th May 2025, heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely Heavy rainfall reported over Kerala; isolated Heavy to very Heavy rainfall also reported over Karnataka and Goa.

Updating on monsoon further advance and monsoon onset over Kerala (issued on 20th May 2025), IMD said, “The Northern Limit of Monsoon continues to pass through 5°N/60°E, 6°N/65°E, 7°N/70°E, 7°N/75°E, 8°N/80°E, 10.5°N/85°E, 15°N/90°E and 21°N/95°E. The conditions are likely to become favourable for Monsoon onset over Kerala during next 4-5 days.”
