In the wake of the tragic Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad, Britain’s King Charles has extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families.
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the King said that My wife and I have been desperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning. Our special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones.”
“I would like to pay a particular tribute to the heroic efforts of the emergency services and all those providing help and support at this most heartbreaking and traumatic time,” he added.
The flight was carrying 242 individuals, including 2 pilots, 10 cabin crew members, and 230 passengers from various nationalities.
Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft departed from Runway 23 at 1:39 pm and issued a mayday call shortly after.
Dhananjay Dwivedi, senior hospital official, stated that the injured are receiving the best possible treatment. Some residents from nearby areas, including the students’ hostel and staff quarters, were also affected.”
Due to the severity of the crash, many bodies were charred beyond recognition, so authorities are relying on DNA testing to identify victims.

Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran has also expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event. We are doing everything in our power to assist emergency response teams and support the impacted families,” he Chandrasekaran.
A dedicated passenger hotline — 1800 5691 444 — has been set up by Air India to provide updates and assistance.
The DGCA has dispatched an investigation team to the crash site.
The aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who had over 8,200 hours of flying experience, and assisted by First Officer Clive Kundar, with 1,100 hours of experience.
