Kochi tea prices decline on higher arrivals

A rise in future offerings dragged tea prices at Kochi auctions this week, with rates of CTC dust ruling lower.

In sale 18, the market was lower by ₹2 to ₹4 and sometimes more as the sale progressed with a lot of withdrawals. The offerings in CTC dust were 5,60,450 kg, witnessing a 78 per cent sales percentage. All blenders together absorbed only 59 per cent of the total CTC quantity sold, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said. Kerala loose tea traders and upcountry buyers lent fair support, and there was some export enquiry from the bottom of the market.

Orthodox dust market was also lower despite 100 per cent sales out of the offered quantity of 18,500 kg. Exporters and upcountry buyers absorbed a small quantity.

Orthodox leaf market strong

The orthodox leaf market was strong with whole leaf firming to dearer, witnessing a strong demand. The quantity offered was 2,07,374 kg with a 96 per cent sales. Exporters to Middle East and CIS countries were active, while there was a fair upcountry demand. Secondary brokens witnessed a strong feature and appreciated in value.

The CTC leaf market was lower and noticed some withdrawals. The quantity offered was 21,500 kg with 79 per cent sales. Export enquiries confined to the bottom of the market.
