The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has sought the State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s approval for going ahead with its plans for long-term power procurement using its coal allocation under the Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India (SHAKTI).
The Commission is expected to conduct a hearing on the KSEB plea in this regard on Tuesday.
Under the scheme, the KSEB hopes to tie up round-the-clock (RTC) power of 500 megawatts (MW) for 25 years.
The Centre, responding to a request by the Kerala government, had earmarked long-term coal linkage for 500 MW under Part B (iv) of the Union Coal Ministry’s SHAKTI scheme last year. Para B (iv) of the scheme provides for the allocation of coal linkages for fresh power purchase agreements to States. States can transfer these linkages to distribution companies (Discoms) – the KSEB in Kerala’s case.
The KSEB has also sought the approval of the Commission for roping in Central PSU Power Finance Corporation (PFC) as transaction advisor for the long-term procurement.
The State-run power utility is expecting the supply to begin in August this year.
