Lilavati Trust denies outstanding amount to HDFC Bank

Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust (LKMMT) or its permanent trustee Prashant Kishore have denied any outstanding amounts to HDFC Bank, a communication from the Trust said.

“It has never borrowed a single rupee from the bank nor are they connected to the borrowing company,” a statement from the Trust said, responding to a statement from HDFC Bank over the weekend.

Further, it added, the Trust had empowered Prashant Mehta to sue “the MD/CEO of HDFC Bank for damages of ₹1,000 crore” for the loss caused to the Trust in monetary and reputational terms, and a notice has been served, Mehta told businessline, calling for the markets and banking regulator to look into the issue. The Trust runs Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

HDFC Bank had recently told the stock exchange, that its senior officials were being allegedly targeted by persons to thwart the recovery of a long outstanding loan due to HDFC Bank “from recalcitrant defaulters ie Splendour Gems Limited (formerly known as Beautiful Diamonds Limited).”

“The outstanding dues towards HDFC Bank, including interest, amount to approximately ₹65.22 crore as on May 31, 2025. Despite a recovery certificate issued by the Hon’ble Debts Recovery Tribunal in 2004 and subsequent enforcement actions, the dues remain unpaid,” it had said.
