Liquor sale in TN increase by 5.42% to ₹48,344 cr in FY25

Revenue from Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Ltd (TASMAC) for the year ended March 31, 2025, increased by 5.4 per cent to ₹48,344 crore as against ₹45,855 crore in the previous year. This is higher than the 3.9 per cent revenue growth clocked in 2023-24 but remains below the 22 per cent surge seen in 2022-23.

Of the ₹48,344 crore revenue from TASMAC in 2024-25, VAT (sales tax) accounted for ₹37,324 crore, while Excise contributed ₹11,020 crore, according to the Home, Prohibition and Excise Department Policy Note for 2025-26. The revenue figures are ‘subject to reconciliation.’

In 2021-22, TASMAC ‘s revenue stood at ₹36,051 crore, which increased to ₹44,121 crore in 2022-23. Revenue from TASMAC in the last three years has increased by nearly ₹12,000 crore, per the policy note presented by V Senthil Balaji, Minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise, in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Addressing issue of illicit liquor, the policy note said that the state government is committed to combat the menace of illicit distillation, sale and transportation of illicit liquor and sale of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances. “The EB-CID along with the Commissionerate of Prohibition and Excise is dedicated to ensure the effective implementation of the State’s Prohibition and Excise Policy,” it added.

Brands

TASMAC has 38 district offices, 43 Indian Made Foreign Spirits depots; 4,787 retail vending shops and 2,362 bars attached to the retail vending shops. There are 250 local and other State brands available in TASMAC, which includes 185 local brands of liquor, 43 local brands of beer, three local brands of wine; six other State brands of liquor; five other State beer brands and eight other State brands of wine, the Policy Note said.

TASMAC sells 551 brands of liquor imported from foreign countries, which includes 26 brands of beer and 223 brands of wine sold through F11 licensed retail outlet (malls/elite shop).

Buy-back of empty liquor bottles

TASMAC also plans to expand the programme of buy-back of liquor bottles. Introduced in the Nilgiris district from May 15, 2022, and later expanded to another nine districts, TASMAC will implement the buy-back scheme for empty liquor bottle across the State. Under the scheme, the consumer who returns the empty liquor bottle will receive a refund of ₹10 collected over and above the MRP, the Policy Note said.
