The Partition of 1947 “divided the clan” of Munir Ahmad, a CRPF jawan who was dismissed for marrying a Pakistani woman on Saturday, and the nikah with his “cousin” was aimed at reunifying the divided family, according to the dismissed jawan.

Making a passionate appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Ahmad held a presser in Jammu on Sunday (May 4, 2025) to give an account of his marriage ceremony.

“My father has cancer and his health deteriorated last year. It was him who had fixed my marriage with my cousin (in Pakistan) when I was a kid. Our clan got divided in 1947. We decided to go for online marriage in May last year. This year my wife visited us on February 28 on a short-term visa and applied for a long-term visa immediately,” Mr. Ahmad said.

Mr. Ahmad claimed he informed the senior officials of the CRPF, including his 72 Battalion, about the nikah performed last year. “I submitted my marriage pictures, online wedding card, marriage certificate to the higher ups in the CRPF when I intended to marry in Pakistan last year. Even when my wife arrived from Pakistan this year, I again shared a copy of visa with the 72 Battalion. I even informed about the long-term visa that allowed my wife to stay back,” the CRPF jawan said.

He said an official letter of the CRPF also acknowledges about the intimation of ‘nikah’. “Nikah is marriage in our custom,” Mr. Ahmad added.

The CRPF jawan was dismissed on the grounds of “concealing” his marriage with his Pakistani wife, Minal Khan, and knowingly harbouring her beyond the validity of her visa.

“My wife’s long-term visa (LTV), for which processes were followed, has been sent to higher authorities in the Ministry of External Affairs for approval. My wife fell in the LTC category. Police and CID verifications for the LTC have been completed,” the CRPF jawan said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ahmad has approached the court in Jammu. “I did not conceal anything. I want justice,” he added. Earlier, the court granted stay to repatriation of Ms. Minal Khan, at a time when she was shifted to Punjab to cross the border.
