A devastating fire broke out at a chemical factory of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Monday (April 21, 2025) afternoon (April 21, 2024) at Domjur in West Bengal’s Howrah district.

While no casualties have been recorded so far, the fire could not be brought under control even after two hours despite around 15 fire engines rushing to the spot from nearby areas like Uluberia and Alampur

.According to eyewitness reports, the fire started a little after noon and spread rapidly through the factory owing to the presence of multiple flammable substances. The sky was completely covered with thick, black smoke. Explosions were also heard inside the factory as the fire spread. Most workers had escaped as soon as the fire broke out.

A large police force from the Domjur Police Station, along with nearly 15 fire engines, rushed to the spot. Nearby areas were also evacuated.

Efforts are still on to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjoining areas.

Meanwhile, hours before the fire incident at Domjur, two people died in a massive fire at a cloth warehouse on Pathuriaghata Street.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 pm on Sunday on the fourth floor of 65/A Pathuriaghata Street in North Kolkata, which housed a cloth warehouse.

While most people were safely evacuated from the building, two people remained stuck and were found unconscious in a room on the fourth floor on Monday morning, a senior Kolkata Police official said.

They were rushed to Medical College, Kolkata, where they were declared brought dead. Initial reports suggest they fell ill due to smoke inhalation.

According to the police official, the two deceased persons were both priests by profession and were originally residents of Rajasthan.

Sunil Kumar Sharma, 48, hailed from Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu, while Kishan Lal Upadhyay, 58, hailed from Jaipur. Mr Sharma was a resident of the building, but Mr Upadhyay was visiting at the time, the police official said.
