Delhi’s Patiala House Court on Wednesday reserved its order on a plea filed by Tahawwur Rana seeking permission to telephonic interaction with his family.
The court heard arguments from both the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Rana’s legal aid counsel during in-camera proceedings and is expected to pronounce its order on the matter on Thursday.
According to sources, the NIA strongly opposed the plea, citing that the investigation is currently at a crucial stage. The agency expressed concerns that Rana could potentially pass on sensitive information during such communication.
Meanwhile, Tahawwur Rana’s legal representative argued that he is a foreign citizen and that his family is concerned about his well-being.
Tahawwur Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman is accused of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. He was recently extradited from the United States and is currently under 18-day custody of the NIA.
He is being interrogated in connection with multiple charges including conspiracy, murder, commission of a terrorist act, and forgery.
