Novo Nordisk’s insulin brand Mixtard will continue to be available in vials, the Danish healthcare company clarified, even as it phases out its penfill.
The penfill is being phased out as part of consolidating of its global manufacturing network, the company said, a process that is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
While the multinational had said late last year that it was discontinuing some of the earlier-generation versions of insulins – veteran diabetologists said, people needing insulin still had multiple options available in the country.
Diabetologist V Mohan said that people who were using the more expensive pen device could shift to a next-generation insulin that was available from the company; vials or other similar products from other companies including local companies like Lupin, Eris Lifesciences etc.
Mixtard penfills were popular for their convenience, however more expensive than the vials, said Mohan, Chairman, Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai. Those who could afford the product could speak to their doctors and shift to a similar product, while those who could afford the vials would not be affected, he said.
Responding to a businessline query, NovoNordisk said, “We wish to clarify that we aren’t discontinuing Mixtard in India and it will continue to be available in vials. Along with it, other form of insulins including human insulins from Novo Nordisk will continue to be available in vials & devices for patients across India.” The company added that it was consolidating its insulin portfolio to create space in its global manufacturing network. And “in this process, we are phasing out the penfill,” it added.
Acknowledging the disruption this decision could cause, it said, “we strive not to leave any patients without alternative treatment options, either from Novo Nordisk or other companies.” The company said it was working with health authorities, healthcare professionals, trade partners and patients in transitioning to other treatments.
