NSE, BSE Top gainers & losers today May 29: Sensex, Nifty 50 trim early gains; Trent, Wipro, IndusInd lead gains, Welspun Corp, Cummins India, IRCTC, Gensol, Bajaj Auto shares in focus

The volatility index dropped 8% to 16.58

The equity indices erased early gains despite positive global cues, outweighed by block deals and increased selling pressure in the primary market.

Sensex declined by 160.10 pts or 0.20 per cent to 81,152.22 as at 12.46 pm, erasing early gains of 500 pts. Nifty 50 slipped by 40.30 pts or 0.16 per cent to 24,712.15.

The stock market opened on a strong note due to positive global sentiment after US Court ruling on Trump tariffs and upbeat earnings from tech giant Nvidia.

On the domestic front, the country’s industrial production growth slowed to 2.7 per cent in April 2025 due to poor performance of manufacturing, mining and power sectors.

The volatility index fell 8 per cent to 16.58. Smallcap outperformed midcap stocks with 0.50 per cent increase intraday.

Nearly 1,381 stocks advanced and 1,374 declined of all the 2,843 stocks that were traded on the National Stock Exchange at the time of writing.

Top gainers & losers intraday

Shares of Trent, Wipro, Eternal, Sun Pharmaceuticals and IndusInd lead the gainers of Nifty 50 pack in the mid-trading session, while Bajaj Finance, Bharat Electronics, Tata Consumer Products, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Shriram Finance slipped nearly 1 per cent to trade as major laggards.

On the sectoral front, banking and FMCGs slipped to trade in negative territory, while realty, IT, pharma, metal, auto and defence indexes staged resilience with marginal gains.

ITI, Anant Raj, Zen Tech, Castrol, HBL Engineering surged 4-6 per cent among smallcap, while Cummins India. Waaree Energies, Premier Energies soared 3-7 per cent among midcap.

Defence stocks – Unimech, Zen Technologies, MIDHANI and GRSE soared 4-10 per cent.

Unimech, Zen Tech, Sky Gold were among the 81 stocks that hit the upper circuit on the NSE. Arkade, Force Motors, HDFC Life, Mazagon Dock, Nibe, Hitachi Energy were among 47 stocks that hit 52-week high, while 19 stocks hit 52-week low.

Trent shares led the gainers of Nifty 50 constituents with 1.64 per cent increase to ₹5,650.

IT major Wipro followed with 1.41 per cent increase to ₹250.92.

Shares in action

IndusInd Bank shares traded at ₹815.20 on the NSE, up 1.25 per cent, after hitting an intraday low of ₹803.05. The stock has been in focus today after SEBI barred five former and current senior executives of IndusInd Bank from participating in the securities market, alleging their involvement in insider trading that helped them collectively avoid losses worth nearly Rs 19.78 crore.

Shares of Welspun Corp, Cummins India, IRCTC, SAIL and Bharat Rasayan have been in action post Q4 results. Bajaj Auto, Alkem Laboratories, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility and more are set to announce Q4 results today. Suzlon Energy shares declined ahead of results. TRCK LIVE UPDATES

On the BSE, MMTC, Welspun Corp, Strides Pharma, KIOCL and Cummins India jumped 7-13 per cent. On the flip side, Sandur Manganese, Jyoti Structures and Polyplex tumbled 6-8 per cent.

In addition, Gensol Engineering shares were in focus as NCLT ordered freezing and attachment of all bank accounts and lockers belonging to Gensol and its associated entities.

Investors will watch out for India’s Q4 GDP data due on May 30, 2025, and the RBI’s policy decision on June 6, 2025. A latest report by ICICI Bank stated that the economy is estimated to have grown by 7 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of FY25.

“In Q4FY25, we expect GDP growth at 7 per cent, which is much higher than GVA. This should take overall GDP growth for FY25 to 6.3 per cent,” it added.
