Of a Madanapalle woman and her five children holding Pakistani citizenship

Five individuals holding Pakistani citizenship are found residing at the Indian Oil Petrol Pump locality at Kuruvanka of Madanapalle town in Annamayya district, and the Kadapa Superintendent of Police has issued a notice instructing them to leave the country immediately.

As per available information, a woman, Gulab Jan, from the Anjaneyaswamy Temple Street area, had moved to Saudi Arabia long ago. She married a Pakistani national, Bashir Ahmed Bhat, three decades ago. The couple had five children, and all of them obtained Pakistani citizenship.

The couple had relocated to India and settled in Madanapalle two decades ago. In Madanapalle, the woman gave birth to a son. Later, her husband passed away.

The couple’s children with Pakistani citizenship — three daughters and two sons — pursued their education, right from LKG up to graduation, in Madanapalle. Over time, the eldest daughter, Shajia Kanwal, married a man from Kerala and settled in Bengaluru. The second daughter got married to a man locally. One of the sons, Mohammed Yasin (32), who married a woman from Madanapalle, works at a local hotel. Another son, Shamma Bashi Ahmed, married a woman from Vayalpadu locality in Annamayya district. One son and one daughter remain unmarried.

Following the Union government’s deadline for the Pakistani nationals residing illegally, or without proper documentation, to leave the country by April 27, the case of Ms. Gulab Jan assumes significance.

Chances of exemption

A senior police officer said that since the woman’s family had been living in Madanapalle for nearly two decades, they might approach the authorities concerned seeking exemption from deportation.

The fact that Ms. Gulab Jan was originally an Indian citizen before her marriage could potentially strengthen her appeal for consideration.
