The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Monday said that 98.26 per cent of the Rs 2,000 denomination banknotes have been returned to the banking system following their withdrawal from circulation.
The Rs 2,000 notes were officially withdrawn on May 19, 2023. At that time, the total value of these notes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore, while the note still in circulation and dropped to Rs 6,181 crore on May 31.
Initially, the RBI had allowed the exchange or deposit of Rs 2,000 notes at all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023. Since then, this facility has continued at the RBI’s regional issue offices.
From October 9, 2023, the RBI offices also began accepting these notes for direct credit into bank accounts.
Moreover, the public has been using India Post services to send Rs 2,000 notes to RBI offices for account deposits, according the central bank, despite being withdrawn from circulation, the Rs 2,000 banknotes continue to be considered legal tender.
