Perplexity AI Goes Live on WhatsApp: Users can now chat, search, and generate images directly from inbox

In a big leap toward making AI-powered search more accessible and conversational, Perplexity AI—led by CEO Aravind Srinivas—has officially launched its assistant on WhatsApp. The announcement came via the company’s X (formerly Twitter) handle, exciting tech enthusiasts around the world.

“You can use Perplexity directly from WhatsApp now. Answers, sources, image generation. A lot more features coming soon there!” Srinivas wrote, marking a major milestone for the AI-powered search engine.

With this move, Perplexity is tapping into the world’s most widely used messaging platform, allowing users to pull up facts, news, or even images—without ever leaving their chats. From quick fact-checking to exploring deeper topics, the assistant aims to make searching as seamless as sending a text.

Perplexity AI’s global rollout

Unlike many tech rollouts that start in the United States, Perplexity’s latest launch is going global from the outset. The goal is simple: to bring AI-powered search tools directly into everyday conversations. Whether users are chatting with friends or researching topics for work, Perplexity aims to become a real-time assistant at their fingertips.

The WhatsApp integration follows a period where Perplexity and Elon Musk’s Grok were actively engaging users on X, providing quick context and fact-checks during online discussions. Now, Perplexity is expanding beyond social media, going mainstream—and mobile.

Early users report glitches

Not everything’s running perfectly just yet. Some early users on X flagged that the image generation tool is still a bit inconsistent. One user said it sometimes refuses to generate images after already doing it once. Another noted that some of the answers feel slightly watered down, possibly because of WhatsApp’s message formatting.

What exactly is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI, Inc. was founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski as a privately held company. For those unfamiliar, Perplexity AI is a next-generation search engine designed to deliver direct, AI-curated answers to users’ queries by leveraging a mix of foundation models. It’s widely recognised for combining conversational simplicity with deep, well-cited research. Accessible via both web and app, Perplexity also offers a Pro version for users who want access to more advanced AI capabilities.

Global AI race heats up

Perplexity’s latest move—launching on WhatsApp—comes at a time when the global AI competition is heating up. After DeepSeek AI’s rapid growth earlier this year, big names like OpenAI, Google, and Elon Musk’s Grok have been rushing to launch new updates.

OpenAI recently rolled out its lighter o3-Mini reasoning model and added new image-generation features for GPT-4o. Grok also launched its latest version, Grok 3, and made most of its features free. Google, not wanting to fall behind, introduced its upgraded Gemini 2.5 Pro model with major improvements.

The race isn’t slowing down either. DeepSeek is said to be preparing its next generation of AI models, which could shake things up even more in the fast-changing AI world.
