Houseboat owners, in association with the various farmer organisations and environmental activists, staged a protest in front of the Alappuzha Port Office on Thursday. The demonstration was held in opposition to an alleged move by the Kerala Maritime Board to allow new houseboat registrations within the jurisdiction of the Alappuzha port.
The protest was inaugurated by senior journalist and environmentalist M. Jayachandran, with V. Vinod, president of the All Kerala Houseboat Owners Association, presiding over the event. K.M. Poovu of the Vembanad Lake Protection Council and Vinod from the Kainakari Development Council were among those who addressed the gathering.
According to the protesters, the move by the board to permit new houseboats and allow vessels registered at other ports to operate in the region poses a serious threat to the fragile ecosystem of the Vembanad Lake and could jeopardise the already strained houseboat tourism sector in Alappuzha.
