Prof. Raja Sekhar said AU began its centenary celebrations on Saturday with a year-long series of educational, cultural and outreach programmes, with a flagging off ceremony of walkathon on Beach Road on Saturday morning.
He elaborated that the centenary celebrations would focus on improving educational standards, upgrading infrastructure and community outreach. Key projects included a central laboratory, rural engagement programmes through affiliated colleges, and construction of an iconic tower to honour AU’s heritage.
The funds would be raised from alumni contributions and corporate social responsibility programmes, he said.
Established in 1926 under the Madras University Act, Andhra University shaped the educational landscape of the Telugu-speaking region, he said while remembering its early leadership, including Sir C.R. Reddy and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Mr. Sribharat said it was a matter of pride for every AU alumnus to participate in the celebrations. He expressed the hope that AU would achieve many more milestones in the future.
In the morning, Commissioner of Police Shanka Brata Bagchi inaugurated the balloon-launch ceremony of the celebration at the AU administrative building.
