Days after the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Wednesday, May 7, launching precision attacks against nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

After India successfully carried out Operation Sindoor, schools, colleges, and airports will remain closed in several states. Check out full details below:

Schools to remain shut in Punjab, Rajasthan & Jammu

Jammu: Schools and colleges will remain closed in areas like Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch till Thursday, May 8 for security purposed after the Operation SIndoor.

Rajasthan: All government and private schools in Rajasthan’s border districts, including Barmer, Bikaner, Sri Ganganagar, and Jaisalmer, have been closed until further notice. 

Punjab: In Punjab, schools in border districts like Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, and Gurdaspur will remain shut today, May 8.

Later in the evening, Ferozepur declared that the district’s schools would be closed on Thursday and Friday. Meanwhile, the administration in Fazilka declared that the schools would be closed till further notice.

In Jalandhar, unforeseen situations have caused IK Gujral Punjab Technical University to postpone its end-semester exams.

430 flights cancelled, 27 airports to remain shut

After India successfully carried out Operation Sindoor, domestic carriers cancelled around 430 flights on Thursday, which is nearly three per cent of the total scheduled flights in the country, as 27 airports remain shut till May 10.

The affected airports include Srinagar, Jammu, Leh, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Bathinda, Halwara, Pathankot, Bhuntar, Shimla, Gaggal, Dharamsala, Kishangarh, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Mundra, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Porbandar, Kandla, Keshod, Bhuj, Gwalior and Hindon.

On Wednesday, more than 300 flights were cancelled, and operations at 21 airports across northern and western India were suspended.

Air India offers full refunds 

The Air India group on Wednesday announced that the airline will provide full refunds on cancellations and a one-time waiver on rescheduling for defence personnel holding defence fare tickets booked on Air India and Air India Express flights with travel dates up to May 31, 2025.

“Air India group is grateful for the selfless service and dedication of our military and defence personnel. In the prevailing situation, for those personnel holding defence fares who are booked on Air India and Air India Express flights till 31 May 2025, we are offering full refunds on cancellation and a one-time waiver on rescheduling flights up to 30 June 2025 to support their duty commitments,” Air India Group said in a post on X.

US Embassy advises citizens to avoid travelling to J&K

The US Embassy in India has advised US citizens to avoid travelling to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

In a security alert issued on Wednesday, the US Embassy in India stated, “As advised in the India Travel Advisory, U.S. citizens should avoid travel to the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. As stated in the April 23, 2025 Security Alert, US government personnel are prohibited from traveling to Jammu and Kashmir.”
