OpenAI on Monday announced an update to ChatGPT’s web search capabilities to improve online shopping for users with personalised product recommendations, including images, reviews, and direct purchase links. This tool will make online shopping smooth and personalised for its users. ChatGPT’s new feature will let you discover and buy products directly in the chat, with pictures, reviews, and buy links.

ChatGPT’s Shopping Update: Accessible to everyone

All ChatGPT users can now access the new shopping feature, including free users and those who don’t log in. The update will be available in its default AI model, GPT-4o. It will be available to all ChatGPT users worldwide, including Pro, Plus, and Free tiers. 

ChatGPT’s Personalised Shopping: No ads, no commissions

Users will receive customised product recommendations across categories like fashion, beauty, home goods, and electronics when they pose specific questions.

According to OpenAI, the update will not include advertisements, and the company will not receive commissions from purchases made through the ChatGPT platform.

The shopping results will be independently determined. ChatGPT’s shopping results will rely on structured data from trusted third-party sources, using data like prices, descriptions, and reviews.

OpenAI’s move to challenge Google’s search

OpenAI is challenging Google’s search dominance with a more user-friendly approach, unlike Google’s ad-filled results. It aims to rival Google in search, where Google’s ad-heavy approach has drawn criticism.

In February, OpenAI’s weekly active users surged past 400 million, a company spokesperson had told Reuters.

According to the company, the generative AI pioneer’s search feature has gained popularity since its introduction last year and has become one of its most sought-after tools, with over 1 billion web searches in the past week.
