Stampede Fallout: Compensation increased to ₹25 lakh to amid suspensions, resignations

After a series of suspensions and resignations in the wake of the stampede that killed 11 people and injured over 50, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has increased the compensation for the families of the deceased from ₹10 lakh to ₹25 lakh.

“Our government hopes that families who have lost loved ones will not suffer further due to financial problems,” the CM said in a post on X.

Earlier on Friday night, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer E.S. Jairam resigned from their posts, citing moral responsibility. The officials said their involvement in the incident was minimal but stepped down, accepting moral accountability.

Prior to this, MLC K. Govindaraj, who served as the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, was sacked from his post on Friday (June 6, 2025). Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Intelligence, Hemant M. Nimbalkar, was also transferred. Other officers who have been suspended include Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash (who was in charge of cricket stadium security), DCP (Central) Shekhar Tekkanavar, ACP of Cubbon Park Division Bala Krishna, and Inspector of Cubbon Park Police Station Girish.

Dispute over accountability surfaces post-tragedy

Despite lacking formal permission and failing to implement standard protocols such as issuing tickets or entry passes, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) went ahead and promoted the celebrations on social media, inviting fans to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, according to cabinet meeting proceedings of the Karnataka government.

KSCA has defended itself before the Karnataka High Court in its petition challenging the FIR. It argued that celebrating RCB’s victory was a decision of the state government, which had earlier felicitated the players at Vidhana Soudha in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and several cabinet ministers — with all secretariat and police higher-ups in attendance. The KSCA claimed the Chief Secretary was guiding the event and that the government had supported it.

The KSCA further stated that the management of the stadium gates was the responsibility of the RCB franchise, M/s DNA, which operates under the direction of the police. The KSCA Managing Committee only rents out the Chinnaswamy Stadium and controls cricket activities in Karnataka; it does not handle audience or crowd management, it said.
